In this episode, you need to lean in as Pastor Steven and Pastor John discuss how the purpose of unity is not uniformity. Unity means we are not going to agree on everything, but we are going to fight for one another until the day we die. If we are to take our view of people that don't look like us from what we see in headlines, and if we are to reduce it down to that, it would kill our ability to empathize with the humanity of that person. So we need to start understanding. We need to start learning some things, exposing some things. Jesus said, "you are the light of the world." This does not only mean to quote scriptures and be a witness to people. It means do not be ignorant. It means we need to shine a light on ignorance.“This is not about color for me.”This is about the systemic oppression of people in power that are supposed to protect and serve. This is the silence of the church that must be addressed. This conversation is the beginning of something that more churches need to have. This is a conversation that most people would be afraid to have. But this is also a conversation that the church should not turn a blind eye to. The church needs to be a voice to the voiceless. This should be the tipping point for the church to have the necessary conversations around true reconciliation. Because if we don't have the presence of God in the conversation and in our hearts, then empathy, compassion, and activism won't matter.“Change starts in your heart.”Guilt is not a strategy, but maybe we don't know the difference between guilt and repentance. Feeling bad doesn't change anything, but repentance is different from guilt. Repentance means “change direction” in the old Testament, and “change your mind” in the new Testament. And so it means we change direction and we have to do it differently. The only way to break the cycle is to repent. But to really repent is to change direction. Repentance is moving differently, thinking differently, speaking differently, refusing to contribute by indifference. It means getting up and walking in a different direction."This conversation is not the end, it's a beginning."________________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. "I can't breathe." "Mama." "Please." On May 25th, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a deli employee called 911, accusing him of buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after the first squad car arrived at the scene, Mr. Floyd was unconscious and pinned beneath three police officers, showing no signs of life. The Medical Examiner has concluded that his death was a homicide. George Floyd's death has become the catalyst for a long-overdue global display of solidarity. Over the weekend, demonstrators gathered in London, Berlin, and Auckland, among other cities, to protest against police brutality in solidarity with the US crowds. "Silence is agreement.""I need you to publicly say this is wrong because this is not just about race. This is about justice. And the entire Bible is about justice."Six days later on Sunday, May 31st, Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina sat down for a conversation with Pastor John Gray of Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Pastor Steven is Caucasian and Pastor John is African American. In this interview Pastor, Steven and Pastor John share some of the same themes we’ve been talking about on this show. We’ve discussed the need for diversity among blacks and whites. We champion diversity among all people including all the foreign-born individuals living in our community. This episode presents Part 1 of their conversation."I don't want special treatment. I want equal treatment."Pastor John's mother was always the person to build bridges and she always brought hope home. And she taught Pastor John to be the same. His mother also taught him to see people through the lens of grace. This is why he extends that same grace that he wants people to have towards him. I encourage you to lean in as they affirm their love for one another and express their grief over the death of George Floyd and many others who have died at the hands of injustice. Watch out for our next episode as we play Part 2 of their conversation. It is important you return next week for Part 2 as they discuss their commitment to listen to and to protect one another. Let us all hear their call to repent. "This conversation is not the end, it's a beginning."________________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Make sure to go back and listen to part one to hear David's backstory of how he came to North Carolina and his calling into ministry.Green Level Baptist Church is more than 150 years old and in their recent history they've started to reach out to different internationals in their community. Pastor David shares his experience in meeting people from Tamil Nadu and partnering to build a dynamic prayer ministry even though COVID-19 made it necessary to do it virtually.Pastor David shared a parable for the way many churches do ministry with internationals. They may think of themselves as the "older" brother in the relationship. Therefore they should do things their way, instructing and guiding their younger brother. But, at Green Level they try to think of partnerships more in the vein of "What does dad want to do?" Because we have a heavenly Father.Their surrounding neighborhoods are 80-90% non-Anglo, and one of the highlights of ministry to their community has been Christmas Caroling. This may seem like a dated form of ministry to the American church but it is proving incredibly impactful in the foreign-born internationals in their community.Angela shares about the administrative and planning side of outreach ministry with an inside look into their process and planning. It started with them deciding to learn about the cultures of the people who share their neighborhoods. Consulting their demographics is another key catalyst that started to change the shape of their services and programs.Although many first-generation internationals want a worship service in their own language they do want their kids to participate in the English-speaking services. Also mentioned in this episode:The 3D Gospel: Ministry in Guilt, Shame, and Fear Cultures________________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. We start by talking about how they are doing in the midst of the global pandemic. We talk about the effects of COVID-19 and what it looks like in our "new normal" with new working situations and kids out of school."I have definitely have gained a lot of respect for our educators during this time and trying to shepherd the church famil. During this time, every church community is a little microcosm community. You have so many folks across the board that something like this global pandemic is affecting them. And in a myriad of ways. Some feel that pain physically, some field of pain emotionally, others feel that pain financially." - DavidMany are asking "Where is God in the midst of this?" or "What is God trying to do?" Also many are going to God for comfort during this time. I am shepherding my own heart, and family, and trying to walk through this season with my congregation while learning new technologies. We talked about what Easter 2020 was like compared to past Easter celebrations at Green Level Baptist. It gives a new meaning to the axiom that the message doesn't change but the medium changes.Churches all over the world, believers all over the world are trying to figure out what, outreach and evangelism looks like during COVID-19.Angela shared about not being able to host the annual Easter egg hunt. They have 10,000 eggs sitting in their basement right now. But will be able to reuse most of the resources next year, making 2021 look like an amazing year! In the past in a church of 200 they were hosting an event for 3,000 people as well as partnering with their Chinese church and Tamal church that is a part of their community. They were contacted by the town to partner on with them on their event in the future which creates an opportunity to reach more international people in the future.Pastor David shares his story about how he came to North Carolina and shares about the history of Green Level Baptist Church. The face of Green Level has really changed from where it was two decades ago and now it is a very international expression of the Church.Green Level is a 150-year-old church this year. But a church is not just a building or a legacy it is a group of people and Pastor David fell in love with the people. "It's not so much the case that God has a mission for his church in the world as it is God has a church for his mission in the world. Mission was not made for the church. The church was made for God's mission." - Christopher Wright________________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Pastor Sammy Joo is from Seoul, Korea. He and his wife Debbie have four children. Pastor Sammy holds a Bachelor's in Linguistics and International Law from a university in Korea. He has a master's from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Doctorate from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Sammy is the teaching pastor at Point Church International and also serves the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina as their senior consultant for Asian ministries. Pastor Sammy is also a heavy metal guitar player. He says most people think that he is a great handyman, but really he's not at all. Pastor Sammy shares the story of how he came to Jesus when he was about 23 years old. He was born into a Christian family and his father was a pastor. He was a typical Christian kid who followed all the rules and regulations. During his junior year in college, one of his father’s friends asked him if he knew the gospel. This very simple question bothered him so he began to read the Bible. One day Pastor Sammy was reading the scripture and came to Hebrews 10:10 where it says, “Jesus died once for all”. At that moment, he experienced the power of Jesus’ blood and that scripture became a reality to him for the first time. That was the day that he experienced the tremendous grace of God and he became born again. It was in the fall of 2002 when God led Pastor Sammy to a Korean pastor in Kentucky who was doing international student ministry. The pastor asked him if he wanted to come and Pastor Sammy did and it changed his life. He thinks that it’s a mutual partnership that God is raising up missionaries from all around the world to impact one another. He realized that there are so many church people in the Bible Belt, but it’s also possible that quite a number of them are not even saved. And they need to be challenged with a very simple question, “Do you know the gospel?” Do you really know Christ? Because a lot of people know about the gospel, but they don't know the gospel verse. There is a big difference between informational knowledge and transformational knowledge. Pastor Sammy also talks about the ABCDs of growing church leaders where the main goal is to connect a first-generation immigrant and a next-generation immigrant. This is his way of helping Asian churches to have unity. Behind all this, the underlying vision of Pastor Sammy is to raise 21st century Moses. God can meet those set 21st century Moses here and send them back to their people to bring them to Jesus Christ. He launched a YouTube channel called “21c Moses” where people can watch daily Bible study and training videos. His prayer is to grow the channel with videos in different languages for the 21st century Moses. Pastor Tamran and his wife, Annette were born in Pakistan. They led a thriving ministry there until God sent them to the USA to help the church here reach Pakistanis living in the US. He and his wife have two young sons and they live in High Point, North Carolina. He also pastors the Point Church Urdu in Cary, North Carolina. He shares his perspective on how the ministry looks like now in 2020. He believes that God has allowed millions of people to come to the US so that they can be shown the love of Christ. His ministry’s role is to share the gospel with this international community. Pastor Tamran shares his belief that the local church must use its authority to pray for the international community. They need to engage with that community and to use language to bridge gaps. This language would help in inviting them and bringing them into the church. They want to reach their community and change the world. Yet if they are not reaching the whole community, they are really shooting themselves in the foot and in their strategy. There’s no limit to what God can do through the international communities - they can become the next Billy Graham and they can become church planters. He also talks about how he has seen God's work and the transformation stories that he has seen. Pastor Tamran shares the story of how one guy from a Muslim background had a dream where Jesus came to him. Because of his dream, he started reading the Bible and started following Christ. His life was changed and he started sharing the gospel with his family. This is one perfect example that you’ll never know when God will use a moment to change a person. Pastor Tamran believes that the best international community is the Bible and there’s no other better resource. Pastors are one of the resources that people can go to and those in the High Point area can be in contact with Pastor Tamran. And if God can do this in High Point, He is also doing that all across the US. There are pastors in other communities raising up training and encouragement as they reach the foreign-born internationals that God is moving into our community. ___________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Both of David's parents are Peruvian. Their family moved to Mexico when his father was 19 and he came to study. He was called into ministry and then went back to Peru. He came to the US at 15 years old. Within a couple of years, his father was leading a church and he went to Campbell University. He wanted to be a doctor but discovered that was not his calling. He wanted to help people. He was serving in his dad's church and felt the call to go to an English speaking church. In 2013 he joined The Point Church and has been a part of that growing movement ever since."The thing about segregation or biases is that it's not only raised into us, but it's also culture, economics, social economics, also education. What I saw in Mexico, because of the environment I was in was a lot of people being disregarded or rejected because of where they came from. Or, the money they had and they didn't have. I was fortunate maybe because I looked a certain way or, but I didn't have the money either." - DavidGod showed David very early on, and his grandparents and parents really guided me that the church is a multinational organization and not just one country. God has really shown him that He wants to eliminate all that, and he's on the move. He's drawing people from every race, every country, every culture, social and ethnic origin.___________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Peter grew up as a Christian in the country he came from. He understands what it is like to be in the minority when it comes to your beliefs. He understands that many Muslims in the United States share similar feelings to his. Peter shares the realities of being a Christian family in a mostly Muslim community. They felt like second-class citizens. There is a lot of violence between the Christian and Muslim communities and seems to be escalating. "We learned not to fear our life more than church bombing happened. We still want to go to church. We still want to pray, and we still want to witness our love for Jesus." - PeterHis family won the immigration lottery and he came to North Carolina working in the health care industry. At the time he didn't realize he was coming to the United States for ministry, but after spending a couple of years in his job and learning the language he realized his calling. The increase of violence in his homeland and the increase of Muslims moving to the United States came with an increase in religious extremism. He began to pray about it and felt God lead him to start to do something about it."There are some extremists who are very loud in their voice. They use propaganda to voice out their opinion. And there is this minority among the Muslim community, we think that all Muslims are right this. When I started to pray about it, I feel, NO, I need to love my Muslim friend, especially those who are moderates. I really can connect with and build the relationship." - PeterThe vast majority of people are people of peace. We have an opportunity to go the extra mile and help put an end to any discrimination and conflict felt by outsiders in our community.___________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Pastor Raudel is a directional elder and campus pastor for the Spanish Campus Summit in Espanol located in Durham. Pastor Raudel is married with three kids. He holds degrees from Duke University, Miami Dade College, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also loves road course racing. He grew up in Cuba and moved to Peru in November of 1988. He moved to North Carolina in 1998 where he found Christ. He planted a few churches by vocationally until J.D. Greear convinced him to go to the Summit Church where he eventually planted a Spanish mission. He believes that people need to hear the gospel in their native tongue. But he also takes seriously the call to be one. And even though we're not. Pastor Raudel says that they have a long way to go and it was a very bold move but God has honored his faith in that. He shared the story of how he and J.D were talking about how Summit Church can start reaching Latinos. Since then, the Summit Church has become the mindset of a multinational church. Pastor Raudel believes that churches have to grow in learning how to do inner-city ministry and even learning their processes. For at times they don't realize that they are unintentionally for the affluent population. There's still room there for people that are not like your congregation. And God calls us to reach out and see the beauty of his body in that community as well. He shares the things that he has seen Summit Church do to avoid the Latino ministry from being just a notch in the belt. One of these is executive leadership where he was given a place of authority so he can first serve then represent. And there is the approach to learning where one does not have to learn everything. The body of Christ needs each other. You don't just give people a face, you need to give them value. Pastor Raudel also talks about compelling church numbers. He shares that it is no longer a matter of if the church in America will be diverse or not. It will be diverse in 2050. Everything points to churches no longer having any majority. And Pastor Raudel wants to be there and wants to take Christ to these people groups now. And they want the church to welcome them now instead of later. ___________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. Pastor Chris is from Apex, North Carolina. He's one of the few people in our area who is actually born and raised in North Carolina. He and his wife Jennifer have been married for 13 years and have 2 biological children: a son and a daughter; and they are involved in a foster-to-adopt journey with a 6-year old boy. Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal Communication from NC State and he holds a Masters in Arts in Christian Education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Chris is the lead pastor of the Point Church with campuses across the Triangle North Carolina region. He became a youth pastor when he went to Southeastern Seminary. He realized that he enjoyed discipling and raising up adult leaders, and this is how God began to change his heart. He started to really get to know a lot of other churches and he thought a lot of people plant churches because they don't like their church. And it was the exact opposite for him. He loved the church. And he loved the church he was serving at. They planted a church because they loved the church and wanted to take all the best things from all the best churches they knew and put them into one. In September 2010, they had their very first service at Mission Valley movie theater across the street from NC State. It has been an incredible journey for Pastor Chris since then as it has been a journey of faith and of following God into places that he never imagined. The church started with just 15 people but within 18 months, they sent 50 people to Apex, North Carolina to plant their second church. That began a church planting and multiplication journey. From the beginning, he had the vision to plant churches in every major community in the Triangle. At first, he had assumed that the churches would all be in English, but God had better plans. They now have four Spanish churches as they continue that multiplication vision. Their multiplication vision did not stop there though. With the help of Sammy, they fulfilled their dream of reaching families of different people, groups and languages, began offering Bible studies and services, and then churches in their heart language. One of their governing values as a church is to intentionally pursue diversity. They commit to having a heart for all demographics and allowing people to best hear the gospel through their heart language. He has seen God bring people and leaders to be a part of the movement of God to reach the nations through Point Church. Pastor Chris believes that statistics have shown that church planting is the most effective method of evangelism. And that's why they are about church planting and multiplication in multiple languages because they want to get Jesus Christ to every major people group, and every major community in the Triangle. ____________Global Hope India: For over 20 years we have been watching God radically transform thousands of Americans & Indian Nationals through missions. We work with 12 long-term indigenous church planting partners located in North, South, East, & West mainland India as well as Northeast India.
